Keeping Your Belongings Safe during Outdoor Sports
February 28th, 2010 | by Connor Sullivan |Regardless of the weather outdoors there are always plenty of adventures. Some love skiing or snowboarding all winter long. As soon as they see flakes they head for the mountains for afternoons filled with slopes, lifts, and downhill fun. When the weather warms, the beach is their destination for surfing, the moutains for sunshine hikes, or angling on rivers and lake. While the great outdoors bring adventure, there are special things that need to be done for protection. If you will be out in the sun, it is important to wear plenty of sunblock regardless of whether it is warm or cold. You may need to don special weather-appropriate clothing or footwear, and you may need to travel with someone else or at least let someone know where you will be. Protecting your safety is not enough though, if you want to have a great time and return again and again. To make the most of the outdoors, it is important to make sure you return home with all of your belongings intact. You do not want to replace ipod parts or iphone screen after a day in the sun, and you do not want to have to spend your hard on money to fix or replace items like sunglasses, wallets, jewelry, or sports equipment. By taking advantage of a few tips before you head outdoors, you will have a better shot at returning home with everything in one piece.
The most important thing to understand if you will be near water you need to keep electronics from getting wet. It may be a good idea to leave them behind, but in this age of GPS hiking and outdoor recreation including activities like geocaching; it can be tough to function without electronic gadgets in the outdoors.
Adventure stores sell special bags or packages that are waterproof and will protect your items from getting wet. If you are new to outdoor adventures, it may be cheaper to just use plastic bags. It is advisable to use two plastic bags, just in case a hole tears into the top layer or just for the security of added protection.
Remember freezing cold and burning sun can do damage to electronic and other items. Whether you leave items behind in your vehicle, or whether you carry items along with you, be sure to keep them out of direct sunlight. Use care to not lose items by attaching them to parts of your clothing.
Carry a wallet with a chain that attaches to your belt loop, wear only secure jewelry like wedding bands and place glass on a cord so they do not slip off when you are not paying attention. With just a few precautions, you can keep your items safe
